The Technical Working Group on Cooperative Statistics of the Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC) is discussing a draft report on guidelines for statistics on cooperatives. Through these guidelines COPAC aims to help improve the quality, accessibility and comparability of statistics on cooperatives around the world.
The group was set up in 2016 by COPAC, with the aim of uniting stakeholders to address the long-standing issue of incomplete data on the size and impact of the global cooperative economy. The first meeting took place in May 2017, when a Conceptual Framework on Measurement of Cooperatives and its Operationalization was presented and discussed.
The guidelines will be finalised and proposed at the 20th International Conference of Labour Statisticians in October 2018. As part of this initiative, the ILO, which currently chairs COPAC, has conducted a series of interviews with experts and stakeholders of the working group, in which they explain why statistics on cooperatives are needed.
In his interview, COPAC board member and Director-General of the International Co-operative Alliance, Bruno Roelants, said: “This work will hopefully lead to the guidelines to be approved by the International Conference of Labour Statisticians in October of this year and, thereafter, be taken into account by the statistical institutes of as many countries as possible.”
